The Believer by Karina Griffiths

ARTIST NOTES: THE BELIEVER
Have you ever put your trust or confidence in someone or something and there just wasn’t any proof that you should? Ever been persuaded to feel differently? Did something that you think you know change? Did you witness something which you considered to be proof of a different outcome? Have you ever assumed blindly? Do you reject anything other than what you think because it is a perceived opposite? You may just be a believer. Throughout time, beliefs have changed the course of history. For example; God? No proof. Yet some believe, because they just know, they feel that God exists. People? There may be evidence that a person is so lovely in one situation, yet what you don’t know is the whole truth about them- they are the exact opposite in another, but you believe, without knowing everything, that they are kind and generous, and play into their story and become their puppet. Beliefs can put us in danger, and can also remove us from harm, and they do this best when they can be challenged, reframed and unassured. Persuasion is the key to belief, and that in itself is confronting to any believer. Truth, for example, can be very persuasive. However, if it has been true, there is no guarantee that it always will be true. We assume it will be. We still believe. Even what I am writing is a belief. Is it true? Experience is the only true method of change. Not Authority- Only Experts. Not generalisation, but reflection. Not blind acceptance but confidence and curiosity. This drawing is about a believer. He has fought for his beliefs. He has walked for weeks without food and water for his beliefs. He died for his beliefs. Perhaps he knew something we didn’t. Perhaps we believe that he did. Perhaps not. It all comes back to the source of the belief. What do you believe? And Why……?

www.karinasfineart.com   www.facebook.com/karinasfineart                     Sometimes I wonder how we as such feeling and emotional beings live without a soul mate, or a couple of good friends, or a family that will always accept us for no matter who we are or choose to be. But then I really wonder if the happiness we need to attract all of these essentials into our lives is a result of pursuing something innate within us that makes us happy to the core. And then we are content and attractive to those around us. I cannot express how happy I feel when I draw. I get transported into a timeless womb, where my eyes and hands talk without words, caressing the subject matter and in some ways, translating it into my own language so that I can tell others how something makes me feel when I see it. It is a compulsion. And I don't do it enough...and when I don't do it, my soul craves the crisp lines that carve the paper and raise it into life bit by bit until it breathes......I love drawing. And I love looking at the work of others. Being inspired, moved and touched by their language. It is an honour to be here, doing what I love.   I have studied a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drawing, and am a member and President of the Australian Society of Coloured Pencil Artists.

I’m fortunate enough to be highly awarded at our Australian shows, most recently First Place, Australian Society of Coloured Pencil Artists Colourbrations International Exhibition, Chelsea Art Show 2016, First Place- Drawing Category,     the Avant- Garde Award at Yakkerboo Art Show, 2016,    Finalist in the  Australian Artist Magazine Favourite Subjects #64, .     ‘Best Of Show’ in the Ann Kullberg International Members Exhibition, 2015 ,      People’s Choice with the Australian Coloured Pencil Network2013,      Best Oil in Show at Berwick Artists Society Show 2015,     First Place at the Cardinia Grand Art Show 2015  (A La Mode Category),     been Highly Commended at the Berwick Great Art show  2015, Casey Art Show 2013, the Bayside Art 2013 Show, and the Yakkerboo Art Show 2014,  and won “Best Painting Under $850’ at the Bayside Art show 2014.

I have also been published in Ann Kullberg’s Coloured Pencil Magazine (April 2015, July 2015, September 2015 and December 2015, April 2016 and October 2017 with a full article and 12 page spread and a 4 page demonstration on portraits, and published in the gallery’s of the Coloured Pencil Magazine , and CREATIVE ARTIST issue #7 (September 2015) with a front cover and full article/ demo.        Just released, is the front cover of Australian Artist February 2016 with a 10 page article, and also Front Cover of the 2015 COLOR Magazine compilation book, and a contributing artist in the ‘PORTRAIT BOOK’, published by Ann Kullberg.     I also have a two page tutorial in The Colored Pencil Cat and Dogs Book , and was also selected to be in the CP Treasures Book 2016, colored pencil masterworks from around the globe.

I teach coloured pencil with my own tutorials on a term basis or one day workshops in Melbourne.   Most of my work is available in limited edition prints.  I have many commissions in private collections around the country.   My inspiration is my baby boy, Hudson, and my life revolves around him, and drawing/ painting.
